History

MEDAL COURSE ORIGINS

Golf has been played at Monifieth since at least 1639 when Parish records show a local citizen being officially admonished for playing golf before noon on a Sunday, when they should have been in church. By 1649 church law had decreed that golf was not to be played at all on the Sabbath.

1845

The first signs of a real course at Monifieth came in 1845 when Allan Robertson of St. Andrews, the greatest player of his day and the world’s first professional golfer, designed a formal, 9-hole layout.

1859

In the years leading up to his death, Robertson was regarded as the best golfer in all of Scotland. Once he died in 1859, it was decided that a tournament would be held to find a new “Champion Golf of the Year.”

1845

First proper golf course (9 holes) laid out on land leased from the Earl of Panmure.

1880

Course extended to 18 holes.

1912

Land bought to lay out a new 9 hole course called the Ashludie.

1930

Ashludie Course extended to 18 holes.
